What is Maize Gluten
Maize gluten is a protein-rich material that manufacturers obtain from the corn wet milling process. During this process, manufacturers separate the kernels into starch, gluten (protein-rich content), germ, and fiber. Then Gluten is separated and processed as a result, the final product appears in a yellow to golden-brown color and has a fine powder texture.
Furthermore, the animal feed industry uses this material, including in fish feeds. Not only is it a good source of protein, but it also improves digestion in livestock animals.
This material also known as Corn Gluten Meal (CGM)
Production Process
The behind process of making maize gluten is very simple. It’s all start with the washing of maize kernels and removing of any remaining dirt. After this process, they soak the freshly cleaned corn kernels in hot water for 24–40 hours.
When the kernels adopt a spongy, soft texture, a mechanical press separates the oil-rich content, known as maize germ (corn germ). The remaining portion of the kernels separates into other materials such as starch, gluten, and fiber.
After this stage the Corn gluten comes in wet slurry form then it goes to industrial drying process, resulting as a high protein by-product of maize known as Maize Gluten.

Why it is very popular among feed manufacturers and farmers?
There are few reasons for getting popularity among feed manufacturers and farmers. The primary reason is because of its high protein nature. It contains 60%-70% of protein which gives livestock animal a perfect amount of nutrients for growth and milk production. The second reason for its popularity is that it improves digestion and overall gut health. Third reason is because of its availability and reasonable pricing among other animal feed raw material.
Uses of Maize Gluten
- Animal feed Industry
- Corn Gluten is a very common raw material in feed industry. Feed Manufacturers and farmers often blend maize gluten with other materials to achieve sustainability, high protein feed and budget friendliness. They use this material in cattle feed, poultry feed, fish feed, and pet food.
- Agricultural
- You can use it as an organic seed-control fertilizer. This material prevents seeds from growing in the lawn.
- Other uses
- Sometimes manufacturers use maize gluten in food flavorings.
Conclusion
Maize Gluten is a by-product of corn. It comes from corn wet milling process. It has high amount of protein 60%-70% and has a yellow to golden brown color with 3%-5% of oil followed by 10% of moisture. This material can be blend with other raw materials for feed manufacturing including Cattle, Poultry, Fish feed and also for pet food. It is very popular among feed industry because of its high amount of protein. The animal feed industry and the agriculture sector use this material, and manufacturers sometimes use it in food flavoring.
